Big Ben to Be Silenced for Four Years for Maintenance

Parliament's famous Big Ben bell is to fall silent for four years while £30million worth of repairs are carried out to stop it falling apart. The regular timekeeping chimes will 'pause' until 2021 - although they will still be sounded to mark occasions such as New Year. The period of silence is far longer than was envisaged when the project was announced in April last year, when the Commons authorities suggested it would be a matter of months.
