Maronite Patriarch: How Can the Budget Be Approved Without Reforms?

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rahi on Sunday called on officials and politicians to steer the state institutions clear of partisan and sectarian allegiances, demanding an end to corruption, bribery, nepotism and impunity that have been plaguing the state for years.

In his weekly Sunday sermon, the patriarch stressed the need to restore the state's prestige and seek competent and employees in order to boost the state's productivity.

Al-Rahi blamed corruption and squandering for the salary scale stalemate, rejecting any plans to impose new taxes.

"How can the budget be approved without introducing administrative and financial reforms that would control the treasury's incomings?" he wondered, deeming the salary hike as a rightful demand that should be met by reclaiming the waste public funds.
