President Michel Aoun on Thursday assured that the obstacles hindering the approval of a new electoral law will be cleared, saying that no one should "dream of extending the Parliament's term, keeping the same vote law or allowing void to take place."
"Unfortunately, the same approach, based on which all previous electoral laws were set out, is being adopted. It needs to be changed [...]. This will take some time, but we will get there," Aoun was quoted as telling his visitors at the Baabda Palace.
"The term of the current Parliament has become like that of a monarch."
Aoun stressed that the new voting system must comply with the provisions of the Taef Accord, calling for the abrogation of political sectarianism and the establishment of full equality between citizens.
