The Lebanese candidate in the race for the UNESCO director-general post, Vera Khoury, withdrew from electoral race Thursday, while the U.S. and Israel declared their withdrawal from the agency itself.
Vera El-Khoury Lacoeuilhe voluntarily dropped out of the election ahead of the fourth round of voting in Paris scheduled for Thursday night, a source from the delegation told The Daily Star.
“The elections were very politicized. [They were] nothing to do with culture and education,” the source said. “We campaigned on substance and ideas. Politics were always present in these elections but [I’ve] never seen anything like this.”
