Kataeb MP Elias Hankache Wednesday stressed that the call to coordinate the refugees return with the Syrian regime does not change the party's stance towards it, adding that this call has to do with pragmatism and the current political status quo.
In remarks published in Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Hankache reminded that Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel had called for Russia-brokered talks with the Syrian regime so as to address the refugees' return.
"It was the Kataeb party the one that called for establishing camps at the border, but our proposal was rejected under the pretext that this would replicate the same scenario with the Palestinian refugees," he said.
On Tuesday, MP Nadim Gemayel said that the only option left is to coordinate this issue with the Syrian government, affirming that this does not change the Kataeb's position.
"If we have to choose between keeping the refugees in Lebanon and establishing contacts with the Syrian regime, then we support the second option if it is the only way to return the Syrians back to their country," Gemayel said.
