Real Madrid earned a phenomenal win in Munich, defeating Bayern 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. The Bundesliga side's last defeat at home in this tournament had happened against precisely Real Madrid three seasons ago, proving just how difficult it is to win at the Allianz Arena.
The visitors overcame a tough first half, after which they could have been trailing by more than one goal, and with an exceptional performance in the second period scored twice through Cristiano Ronaldo. The result is excellent for the second leg, but left some with a bittersweet aftertaste, as Manuel Neuer saved Bayern from an even more lopsided scoreline.
The extraordinary result. Madrid showed character and resilience to react after an overwhelming first half by the Bundesliga team, who had dominated for long spells. Ronaldo seems to be hitting top form at the most important stage of the season. Karim Benzema showed an arsenal of moves and passes that should have ended up in the net. The back four performed extremely well against one of the best attacks in Europe. More importantly, the team's bench is as solid as ever. Not only were Raphael Varane and Pepe's absences covered, but Marco Asensio and James Rodriguez also joined the match and made the side perform even better.
Real Madrid had sufficient chances to bury the tie, but between the strikers' poor finishing and Neuer, Bayern still have a chance at the Santiago Bernabeu. Gareth Bale cannot find his best form. The first period could have ended up very differently, as Real Madrid's midfield looked overwhelmed.
