Russian Television to Make Own Version of Chernobyl Series

Russia’s state-run NTV channel will film its own version of the HBO/Sky Atlantic's series Chernobyl, tracing a different version of events which blame the nuclear disaster on a CIA saboteur.

Director of the upcoming Russian series, Alexei Muradov, told The Moscow Times newspaper that his version of the story will be based on a conspiracy theory that "Americans had infiltrated the Chernobyl nuclear power plant" and likely caused the explosion.

"Many historians do not deny that, on the day of the explosion, an agent of the enemy's intelligence services was present at the station," he said.

Russia's culture ministry contributed to the funding of the series by providing the production company with 30 million rubles ($463,000), according to the Hollywood Reporter.
