The French government is planning to ban fashion companies from destroying unsold items, a government official reported.
“Too many companies feel OK with just throwing away or destroying the shoes or the clothing that haven’t been sold. You can’t do this anymore. It’s shocking,” French Deputy Ecology Minister Brune Poirson said during a conference on fashion and sustainability in Copenhagen.
Poirson criticized brands that would rather destroy their products than have it on sale.
Last year, Burberry pledged to stop disposing its unsold items after it had been revealed that unsold goods worth almost $37 million were destroyed in 2017.
