Key Ingredient in Whitening Strips Harms Inner Teeth Layer

A new study has found that the active ingredient in whitening strips, hydrogen peroxide, can harm the deep layer of teeth.

Hydrogen peroxide was found to be infiltrating the enamel, the outer layer of teeth, and reaching the middle layer, dentin, which is rich in proteins and collagen.

“My colleagues and I sought to further characterize what the hydrogen peroxide was doing to collagen. Our results show that treatment with hydrogen peroxide concentrations similar to those found in whitening strips is enough to make the original collagen protein disappear,” senior author of the study and associate professor of chemistry at Stockton University in New Jersey, Kelly Keenan, said in a statement.
