French Health Agency Warns LED Lights Damage Eyes

LED lights can damage the eye’s retina and cause severe troubles to sleep rythms, a new report warned.

According to the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety, known as ANSES, new scientific evidence prove the "phototoxic effects" of short-term exposure to high-intensity blue light and the high risk of age-related macular degeneration follwoing chronic exposure to lower-intensity sources.

"Exposure to an intense and powerful (LED) light is 'photo-toxic' and can lead to irreversible loss of retinal cells and diminished sharpness of vision," it said.

Chronic exposure can "accelerate the ageing of retinal tissue, contributing to a decline in visual acuity and certain degenerative diseases such as age-related macular degeneration."
