Iran Condemns UK's Decision to Proscribe Hezbollah

Iran on Saturday slammed the United Kingdom's decision to proscribe Hezbollah's political wing and add it to its terror list, saying that such a move turns a blind eye to both the will of a large segment of the Lebanese people and the group's role in fighting the Islamic State.

"This British decision means deliberately ignoring a large part of the Lebanese people, as well as the legitimacy of Hezbollah in Lebanon's administrative and political structure," Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

"In addition to helping preserve Lebanon's territorial integrity over recent decades, Hezbollah has been one of the pillars of the fight against terrorism and terrorist groups such as the Islamic State in the region," Qasemi added.
