Hariri, Bassil Meet for First Time Since Future-FPM Tensions

Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Free Patriotic Movement leader Gebran Bassil on Monday held talks for the first time since their parties engaged in a war of words after the latter had accused Sunni politicians of depriving Christians of key state posts.

According to a statement issued by the premier's office following the five-hour-long meeting, the two men affirmed that the understanding sealed three years ago between the Future Movement and FPM "will continue to be strong and effective", adding that it would help ensure the needed stability to achieve harmony inside the government.

The statement also noted that the pair also agreed on the need to prioritize the country's interest over all else, with both outlining the importance of activating the government, providing a favorable atmosphere to pass the 2019 state budget, setting out an economic plan, and addressing the country's problems.
