Hankache Says Pre-Agreement on Constitutional Council Members Aims to Muzzle Opposition

Kataeb MP Elias Hankache on Thursday said that the partitioning of the Constitutional Council's seats is aimed at completely and permanently muzzling the opposition, condemning the implicit agreement that was sealed ahead of the fake Parliament election.

"Lawmakers did not even look at the résumés of the 50 candidates," Hankache told Voice of Lebanon radio station.

"The lawmakers were asked to elect five members while knowing that there is a pre-agreement on the names who will win," Hankache noted.

"Everything is now based on the mentality of partitioning. It is unacceptable to deal frivolously with major and delicate issues. The pre-agreement has undermined the lawmakers' role and impacted the people's trust in them."

"The last resort the opposition turns to in Lebanon's quasi-democratic system is the Constitutional Council."
