Pompeo Tells Hariri Hezbollah Poses Threat to Lebanon

Prime Minister Saad Hariri said on Thursday as he was ending his a five-day visit to Washington that the final decision over the Lebanese-Israeli disputed land and sea borders on a gas pipeline might possibly take place in September.

“We consider the process to be viable and will continue to support constitutional next steps leading up to a final decision in the coming months, hopefully September,” Hariri said in a statement to the press after meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The Premier reiterated to Pompeo during their 40-minute meeting, joint commitment to fight terrorism and his support to the ongoing negotiations.

In his turn, the US official indicated that Iran and its proxy, Hezbollah, pose a threat to Lebanon.

Pompeo pledged his country’s unrelenting support for Lebanon's “credible state institutions” as they are fundamental to safeguard the country’s security, stability and sovereignty.

“This is a region that is threatened by Iran, and a nation that is threatened by its proxy Hezbollah,” he pointed out.

He thanked Lebanon for hosting more than one million Syrian refugees and hoped the country would make necessary reforms to unbolt international financial aids.

Hariri also met Undersecretary for Political Affairs David Hale, Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker, and US assistant secretary of Treasury, Marshall Billingslea.
