U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo on Friday stroke a blow against Hezbollah while marking the 15th anniversary of the assassination of late Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
“Multiple Hezbollah-linked individuals were indicted for their roles in this terrorist attack and must finally be brought to justice,” Pompeo said in a statement.
“Hezbollah has demonstrated through its terrorist and illicit activities that it is more concerned with its own interests and those of its patron, Iran, than what is best for the Lebanese people,” Pompeo pointed out.
“The United States continues to stand proudly with the Lebanese people in their peaceful calls for reform, transparency, and accountability,” he noted, outlining that the US is keen to support the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
On Twitter, he remembered former Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri and 21 other victims who were assassinated, 15 years ago today.
“Ending impunity is imperative to ensure Lebanon’s security, stability, and sovereignty. Those responsible for this attack must be brought to justice,” he added.
