Hale: It is Time to Form a New Government, Implement Reforms

Senior US State Department David Hale on Thursday met with President Michel Aoun, with talks featuring high on the latest developments in Lebanon and the region, namely the economic crisis and the government’s formation.

“The Lebanese people are suffering due to the officials’ failure in solving the economic problems currently prevailing over the country,” Hale said following his meeting with Aoun.

“There is a possibility today to form a government that would be able to halt the ongoing collapse and implement reforms,” he added, voicing the U.S. continuous support to Lebanon and its people.

“We are ready to help in forming a new government but we cannot achieve that without the help of the Lebanese partner,” he pointed out.

Hale blamed Hezbollah and its illegal activities for preventing the establishment of a peaceful; State, saying that Iran is the one presenting the funding.

Regarding the border demarcation negotiations, Hale expressed his country's readiness to facilitate negotiations between Lebanon and Israel on the maritime borders, saying that they would bring experts to help in this file.

On Wednesday, Hale met with Lebanese officials with whom he also addressed the government's formation.

He met with caretaker Foreign Minister Charbel Wehbe and Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain el-Tineh.

“Cooperation is a must if we need to implement reforms,” Hale said following meeting with Berri.

He also met with PSP chief Walid Jumblat in Clemenceau and PM-designate Saad Hariri at the Center House.
