The European Union Friday urged all Lebanese political groups to work for the quick formation of a new government, saying it was the only way out of the country's "self-made" crisis.
"The EU calls, once again, on all Lebanese political forces to support the urgent formation of a government," EU's oreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement. "Parliamentary consultations to this end should start without delay. Lebanon needs a government capable of delivering on key economic and governance reforms and to prepare for the elections in 2022, which need to take place on schedule."
Borrell, commenting on former Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri stepping down a day earlier, said the EU "deeply regrets the persisting political stalemate in the country as well as the lack of progress in the implementation of urgent reforms."
