Foul Odor of Fruit Forces Evacuation at Australian University

Firefighters in Australia were called to the University of Canberra on Friday following a "strong smell of gas” that forced the evacuation of students from the campus.

Later, what was suspected to be a gas leak turned out to be emanating from a durian fruit that had been left in a bin near an air vent on the second floor of the building.

This fruit was once recognized as the "king of fruits" and was loved for its sweet and savory flavor, namely in China.

Food writer Richard Sterling once described the fruit’s odor as "turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock", saying it can be smelled from a far distance.
