Space Agencies to Discuss Impact of NEO Collision with Earth

NASA and FEMA agencies will be carrying a drill to prepare for any potential collision with Earth.

Scientists will discuss the impact that an asteroid, comet or any other near-Earth object (NEO) would have if it hits the planet.

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Center for NEO Studies (CNEOS) developed the fictional premise with a fictional scenario.

"These exercises have really helped us in the planetary defense community to understand what our colleagues on the disaster management side need to know. This exercise will help us develop more effective communications with each other and with our governments,” NASA's Planetary Defense Officer Lindley Johnson said in a statement.

The two agencies are partnering with NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO), the European Space Agency's Space Situational Awareness-NEO Segment and the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN).
