French Prime Minister Edouard Phillipe on Monday announced that a new Paris police chief will be appointed this week following the violent protests that jolted the capital on Saturday, saying that police officers will be granted more decision-making powers and given extra equipment to act on the ground, including drones.
Phillipe said that the government would ban “yellow vest” demonstrations in case violent groups were identified among the ranks of the movement's protesters.
“From next Saturday, we will ban ‘yellow vest’ protests in neighborhoods that have been the worst hit as soon as we see sign of the presence of radical groups and their intent to cause damage,” Philippe said in a televised speech.
“These were criminal acts. The government’s response must be strong,” he added.
